The only thing better than heading out on a fun and exciting getaway in your RV is getting to bring your furry friend with you! Having your pet along on a road trip can elevate the experience from good to great when it comes to quality time and bonding. But before you embark on your travels together, it’s important to think about how to best prepare for your pet to have a safe and comfortable journey.

Here are a few helpful tips for traveling with your pets!

Create Familiarity Within the RV

The first steps you will want to take should happen well in advance of the big trip. Animals have much stronger sensory receptors, especially when it comes to their sense of smell. With a new environment, you will need to let them take their time exploring and getting used to the RV to ensure they don’t get overwhelmed, while on the road. Make sure to take them in several times, so they can get used to the idea of going in and out. Over time, they will become accustomed to the smells, sights, and feelings of the RV!

Maintain Their Normal Routine

As hectic as your RV travel plans may be, you should still consider leaving some regularly scheduled activities intact. This may include eating times, sleeping and waking times, exercising times, and anything else that might be a way to calm the nerves while you’re on the road. Hopefully, they will enjoy the other activities you have planned, too. Just remember that nothing will be fun for your pet if they’re tired or hungry!

Pack the Necessities

Just as your human friends need their own supplies, your furry friends have a few needs of their own. Make sure to pack the same food they normally eat and enough of it to last the whole trip. This will be especially important if your pet is on a specific diet. You also need to keep in mind that brands you think will be available everywhere may not be as popular farther away from home. Remember that even under the best of circumstances, changing up your pet’s diet can make them sick, and you don’t want a sick pet while you’re traveling.

In addition, try to throw in things that remind them of home. This way, if they start to feel a little stressed or homesick, they can find something that’s going to comfort them. Their bed, favorite toys, and even some of their favorite treats can be a great way to help them relax and create a more enjoyable experience that they will be excited to do again!
