If you’ve got a racing car, there’s a good chance you’ll need to tow your vehicle for taking part in a competition at some point. If you own a trailer, this can be a pretty straightforward process. However, there are a few things you should consider before you give it a shot, especially if you’re new to towing. This short guide will teach you the basics of how to safely tow a race car.

Hitch Your Trailer

It’s important to make sure that your trailer is in good shape to be towed and is properly connected to the tow vehicle. Hitch up your trailer and ensure that the ball hitch lock is secured. Cross the safety chains under the hitch in an “X” pattern for enhanced safety. Next, connect the wiring harness. You’ll want to have someone sit in the tow vehicle and press the brake pedal and then the turn signals while you watch the lights to make sure that they are working. Check the pressure of all the tires to make sure they are up to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Then take a walk around the whole towing setup to make sure everything is in place.

Weight Distribution

Find a good spot to park the trailer that has stable, level ground and plenty of room for the race car to approach the ramps. Take a look at the size and shape of the trailer and determine out how you’re going to load the vehicle.

It’s important to figure out how to distribute weight on your trailer. The weight should be distributed evenly from one side to another so as to avoid putting too much weight on one side of the axle, and by extension, the tires on one side of the trailer. The weight should necessarily be centered over the front axle. This is the best place to load the majority of the weight because if the weight is too far back, the trailer can become unsteady when you tow it.

Load Your Trailer

Park your tow vehicle and trailer in the designated spot and then get the ramps ready for loading your car. If you have a loading ramp gate, lower it to the ground. If you have removable ramps, connect them to the trailer and make sure they’re totally secure. The ramp angle shouldn’t be so steep that your race car will have trouble getting up the ramp. Drive your car behind the trailer, align it properly, and drive up the ramp at a smooth and controlled speed. Once your car is on board, put it in parking and strap it down with ropes or ratchet straps.

Tow Safely

The key to hauling a trailer safely is to take it easy and give yourself plenty of space around the towing setup. Don’t try to pass other vehicles at high speeds on the highway. If you must pass someone, make sure you’re not going up a hill where your tow vehicle might not have enough power to quickly make the pass. Frequently use your mirrors and remember that when you reverse, the turning will be the opposite of how it normally is.
