Toterhome Driving Tips
Taking off in your toterhome for your next camping adventure is one of the best experiences you can have as an outdoor enthusiast. Whether you spend the day hiking, swimming, or just enjoying the open air, you’ll always have a comfortable place to come back to. But getting to your destination can be a bit of a challenge. Toterhomes are obviously much bigger than your standard vehicle and can pose different challenges from regular driving or even towing smaller trailers. You’ll want to practice some basic safe driving habits to make sure you and your camper get to the campground safely and smoothly.
Stay in the Right Lane
As much as you may hate it, the right lane is where you’ll want to hang out when you’re driving a toterhome. You need to slow down and slower traffic is obliged to stay in the far right lane. Passing any vehicles is not a good idea. For these trips, you’ll be the vehicle other drivers pass. The only exception is when passing through big cities where the far-right lane is used primarily for merging on and off the highway. In this case, go to the next left lane to allow for easier merging for other vehicles and keep you from stressing over the presence of other drivers.
Know your Clearance Level
All big rigs are built to fit under the standard overpass, but every once in a while, you’ll run into something that’s less than standard. There are rules and regulations to lower clearance heights, so there will be signs notifying you when one is coming up. It’s up to you to know if you’re going to clear it or if you need to find another way around it.
Additional Mirrors and Adjustments
When maneuvering your toterhome, you’ll be relying on your mirrors to let you know where obstacles and other drivers are. This means you’ll want to make sure you use them optimally and, if necessary, add other mirrors. Take time to ensure your mirrors can help you see all the way down the side of your coach. And if you need to add mirrors to help you maximize your range of sight, look for ones you can have installed.
Practice Driving
All of this is easy to talk about, but the only way you’re going to get better at driving your toterhome is to practice. Find an empty parking lot or a low traffic area and practice some of the most common basics, like braking, reversing, and turning. This will make your first trip less stressful and safer. No matter how silly it may feel, it’s an important step in the learning process so don’t skip it.
