Prep Your Toy Hauler
Since you’re going to be taking a large vehicle filled with powersports vehicles on the road, you want to make sure everything is functioning properly before you head out. A few minutes preparing can prevent an accident on the road. Start by checking your tire pressure. Tires need to be properly inflated to reduce the chance of a blowout and reduce the wear on your tread.
You’ll also want to make sure that you can see other vehicles on the road. Once your toy hauler is hitched, hop into your tow vehicle and check the mirrors to make sure you can see the whole length of the trailer behind you. Finally, make sure others can see you. Test your brake lights and turn signal lights. Make sure they are all bright and visible.
Distribute the Weight
Once you’ve hitched your toy hauler to the toy vehicle, it will change the weight balance and how the tow vehicle drives. To keep things as manageable as possible, you should distribute the weight evenly. If there’s too much weight far back, it creates an imbalance when you speed up.
The ideal ratio is 60% of your cargo in front of the front axle, 40% behind it, and 10% of the total weight on the trailer hitch. Place the weight shifted forward as much as possible to balance out the weight of your powersports vehicles. To ensure there’s even pressure on the tires, you have to distribute the weight evenly from left to right. This will give you greater control over your rig when you drive.
Load Your Vehicles
Once you’ve planned out the weight distribution, it’s time to load the toy hauler. Before you begin, make sure your tow vehicle is in park and chock the wheels to keep things as steady as possible. Lower the gate so that it functions as a loading ramp. Aim for level ground and using the ramp at a low angle. This will make it easier to load.
Drive your powersports vehicles up the ramp as straight as possible. Keep the speed slow and turn off the engine as soon as you’re inside the bay. You don’t want fumes building up in such a small space as that can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Secure Your Vehicle
Once you’ve got your powersports vehicles inside the toy hauler, it’s time to secure them in place. If you don’t do this, they can jostle around when you travel, which will not only damage your vehicles but also mess up your weight distribution, which might cause you to have a harder time controlling your vehicle.
Make sure your powersports vehicles are tied tightly. You can use your ratchet straps to secure your suspension or you can use D-ring tie-downs to secure it to the interior. Whatever you use, make sure you test it by giving your vehicle tugs and shakes from all angles. Once your vehicle is secure, you are done loading!
