Travel Trailer Vs. Toy Hauler: How to Choose
If you’ve decided on a towable RV, you might have narrowed your choice to two options: travel trailers and toy haulers. Both of these are great family rigs, with plenty of comfort and function. Here are some ways to compare the two to help you decide.
Our experienced team at Victory Custom Trailers can field any questions about the pros and cons of both of these types of towable RVs. We look forward to welcoming you to our dealership in Metamora, Michigan, where we serve the RV community from Detroit to Flint.
Travel Trailers Are Best For….
Travel trailers are designed to be a comfortable home away from home, with lots of home-like amenities such as a larger refrigerator, a flat-screen TV, a fireplace, and an outdoor deck. Many are feature-rich and luxurious. They may have multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, slide-outs, and awnings.
Toy Haulers Are Best For….
Toy haulers are designed to transport cargo and also to provide accommodation at the destination. The main focus is providing a protected, spacious cargo area to house powersports vehicles or other bulky objects. A lot of space is taken up by this large cargo bay, so they usually have fewer bedrooms and only one bathroom. Typically they have fewer amenities than a comparable travel trailer, but some are pretty deluxe!
The Size Factor
Travel trailers are usually the lighter of the two, while sturdy toy haulers are usually built with a heavier frame. They get even heavier once the cargo is loaded. This means a toy hauler needs a tow vehicle with a higher weight capacity, and it’ll require more fuel to get where you’re going.
Both come in about the same range of lengths, but the travel trailer will have a more homey layout and probably feel more spacious because it doesn’t need to preserve a garage for your goodies.
How to Choose?
The right one for your family depends on how you like to travel and what your priorities are.
Travel trailers are great for:
- People who travel often or take long trips.
- Folks who want more luxury.
- Smaller tow vehicles.
- Those on a tighter budget.
- Larger groups who want more spacious living areas.
Toy haulers are great for:
- Powersports enthusiasts who want to bring their rigs.
- Folks go on the road to buy or sell things at fairs, festivals, or antique shows.
- People who work on the road and need a mobile office, salon, workshop, etc. in the cargo bay area.
