Using an Auto Trailer Safely and Legally
To boost your efficiency in transporting cars and trucks you need a sturdy auto trailer. Depending on the load you intend to haul, you can select an auto hauler of matching size and capacity. And that’s not all. You can also use the trailer to haul your expensive recreational equipment such as boats, canoes, bikes, and more. At Victory Custom Trailers, in Metamora, Michigan, we have an extensive inventory of auto trailers for sale, which you can pick from. Visit us to check out our collection of trailers and get all your queries about the right trailer addressed by our experts. We also serve our customers from Detroit and Flint.
But, before you head to our dealership, read through this brief guide where we share the safety measures you need to ensure while hauling heavy equipment through Michigan. Follow these guidelines to stay safe and keep others secured, too.
Ensure That You Have a Valid License
To tow a trailer in Michigan, you need the rig to be registered with the Secretary of State’s office. All trailers, irrespective of the weight, must be registered and titled.
If your auto trailer (empty) weighs less than 2,500 pounds, you’ll be required to pay a $75 license plate fee. You’ll also need to obtain a bill of sale and get the weight of the empty vehicle endorsed by an official marker.
For auto trailers that weigh between 2,500 and 9,999 pounds, the plating fee is $200. The fee is bumped up to $300 for all trailers that weigh over 10,000 pounds.
Inspect the Rig Before You Hit the Roads
One last check of the trailer is a good idea before you begin your trip. Also ensure that your auto trailer is set with:
- Two rear reflectors and working tail lights
- Working brake lights, red or amber, if the trailer obstructs those on the towing vehicle
- Rear stop lights, front and rear reflectors, and red clearance lights on the side and rear (on trailers weighing over 3,000 pounds)
- On trailers weighing over 5,500 pounds, verify that you have all the above and a strong braking system that can control the trailer’s movement.
Properly Load and Secure the Cargo
It’s important to load all the equipment and secure them properly so they won’t move when the vehicle is in motion. Besides damaging your cargo and scratching the trailer’s body, it can be a safety hazard for others on the road, too.
Safety Measures to Follow
As a responsible trailer owner, keep the below in mind:
- The tow vehicle should be able to accommodate the weight, size, and capacity of the trailer.
- The load in the trailer should be distributed evenly to prevent swaying and the cargo from moving inside while the vehicle is in motion.
- In case there’s swaying, slow down by applying the brakes in the trailer and not in the towing vehicle.
- Keep the speed under control, especially when going up or downhill.
- Check the weather forecast before you begin the trip. In case of intense weather, pull over to the side and let conditions get better before you resume.
